Selvarani, 42, and her husband have two of their three children in private school—
two boys and a girl, 10, 8 and 4. Her husband has always been supportive and helps
her with the mini-restaurant business. Before availing themselves of the first loan in
2006, they sacrificed their quality of life to educate the children in a good primary
school. They did farming to help with expenses, but had to sell their livestock in
order to start the business. On occasion, they gave room to depression when they
did not get at least minimal support from neighbors and others.

With their savings, the PAT loan, and another loan, she and her husband managed
to inaugurate their “hotel.” After two years, they now employ 4 people. Because
Suthamalli is a place where the neighboring villagers assemble for their informal
meetings and to purchase their household needs, they anticipate a good increase in
business with an expansion. Three more people will be employed.
